Untreated Lamb's Wool grown chemical free from France. The lamb's wool provides a comforting natural fiber layer quilted underneath the cotton mattress covering. The lamb's wool contains lanolin -- a natural dust-mite repellent. The sheep live in well cleaned and well maintained barns in France . Once the sheep are sheared, the wool is cleaned in an odor free non toxic pure soap-based solution, rather than herding the sheep into a chemically treated trough. SPRINGS are engineered in Switzerland, the Royal-Flex¨ innerspring unit is the finest offset coil spring system available, with 85% more coils than is standard. These open ended, unknotted six turn coils are more flexible, which means greater sensitivity to body contours, overall body support and minimum friction. The innerspring unit is double heat tempered, a process where the coils are baked in an oven, cooled, then baked again.

The heat tempering process provides greater durability and resistance to sag. Royal-Pedic's layered organic cotton padding is 100% organic cotton. Certified Organic cotton is carefully chosen from fields that have been free of chemical fertilization and insecticides for 3 to 10 years. The cotton goes through a garnet machine, which converts the cotton balls into beautiful layers of the finest organic cotton available in the world. The inner padding is hand tufted, compressing it for exceptional back support and minimizing body impressions. Each mattress is meticulously hand tufted with European tufting straps to pre-compress the cotton padding for orthopedic back support.

Hand tufting is a process our company founder, learned back in the 1930's while working for Heals of London, a premiere mattress maker, who at the time made mattresses for the Royal Family of England. It takes skilled craftsmen much longer to make one of our custom made, hand tufted mattresses, but highest top of the line quality has always been important to our company . Our Royal-Pedic Box Springs are the most comfortable and durable available: Royal Pedic provides 50% more coils in the center-third of our box spring for extra support where it's needed the most (about 40% of our body weight is located in our torso area). Royal Pedic springs are an extra durable 8 3/4" gauge thickness of wire compared to an average 9 1/2" gauge wire used by others. Our box spring units last for many, many years. The coils are double heat tempered to resist sagging and provide more durability. Double heat tempering is when the coils are baked in an oven, cooled down and then baked in the oven again. The number of coils we use in our box spring unit is 22% more than the industry standard. This higher coil count results in more coils that are closer together, providing additional support for the mattress to prevent lumps in the mattress from developing. The foundation we use to mount our coil springs is an extra wide slat version to provide more support for the coil to rest on - the same width of slat that is required for hotels for the assurance of superior durability. We do not hand tie our box springs. This method of holding the coils in place with cording can result in a lumpy mattress. The cording can and does stretch, which forces the coil out of position on an angle. In addition, many workers who hand tie box springs end up with carpal tunnel and arthritis in their hands. Instead of hand tied box springs, we use a wire system called the Webster Lock Grid System to keep the coils in place. Steel wire is woven throughout the tops of the coils to secure the coil in place to eliminate the possibility of any lateral movement. Sleep safely in your own bed. The mattress features our double heat tempered, Royal-Flex¨ innerspring system designed in Switzerland. The innerspring unit contains 85% more coils than is standard with most manufacturing .The coils in the mattress are open ended, unknotted, six turn coils providing more flexibility, which means greater sensitivity to body contours, overall body support and relaxation. Skilled craftsmen hand-layer the organic cotton padding on each side of the innerspring unit after securing the Organic cotton fabric to the innerspring unit to prevent the cotton padding from pocketing into the coils. The inner cotton padding is encased in organic cotton ticking, which is free of dyes, sizing chemicals, fabric softener chemicals, and fire retardant chemicals. The mattress is hand tufted the old fashioned way with European tufting straps to pre-compress the padding for orthopedic back support. We do not use buttons to tuft our mattresses because buttons have a tendency to turn on their side creating an uncomfortable sleeping surface. Over time as the padding compresses, the string that connects the buttons is no longer as taught allowing the buttons freedom to contort on its side.

PBDE;s changes a child's intelligence and memory and increases hyperactivity, damages hearing learning and Flame retardant passes through the placenta and is absorbed by the new born. The federal EPA, has jurisdiction over the chemicals but has made no move to regulate them. Two Cal/EPA scientists, writing in a scientific journals, have recommended a phase out of the chemicals.-Less toxic alternatives to the persistent PBDE flame retardant are desirable; wrote McDonald and Cal/EPA scientist Kim Hooper. Representatives of the four companies that manufacture PBDE's oppose a ban, saying the compounds' benefits to pubic safety are well known and their risks are uncertain. Several dozen flame-retarding compounds other than PBDE's exist and do not accumulate in tissues and pose less risk. Exposure to toxic chemicals are probably highest in North America because it is the only place still using the form of PBDE most likely to accumulate in humans and the environment. That compound, penta-BDE, is banned in Europe but is used in polyurethane foam of furniture and building materials in the United States. Exposure levels of tested Americans vary widely - some people carry concentrations as much as 100 times as high as others. Americans carry 10 to 70 times as much PBDE's in their breast milk, tissues and blood as Europeans do. Lead, mercury and PCB's - are known to harm human health at levels found in the environment. The new studies provide evidence that PBDE's may be the fourth. PBDE's have striking similarities to PCB's which were banned in the 1970's because they were collecting in the tissues of people and wildlife. Like PCB's and DDT, PBDE's are slow to break down, persisting in the environment and accumulating in human and animal fat. PBDE concentrations increase as the chemicals move up through the food web, peaking in top predators such as whales, dolphins, birds of prey and humans.
PBDE's mimic thyroid hormones, which regulate the growth of a baby's neurological system. Because of that, if exposure comes during a critical phase of brain growth, it can alter how the brain develops. Chemicals are altering thyroid hormones. Altering thyroid hormones during fetal development ;can affect how the brain functions.Also, Eriksson and other toxicologists say the flame retardant has the same effects as PCB's on the brains of newborn animals in the same doses. In several studies, children born to women who ate large amounts of PCB-contaminated fish have been found to have reduced intelligence. Some women are carrying amounts of PBDE's comparable to the amounts of PCB's that reduce children's IQ's, toxicologists say. As demand for flame retardant in electronics and furniture grew in the 1980's, PBDE's began to build up in nature and people, and when Swedish scientists checked women's breast milk and discovered that levels of PBDE's had increased sixty-fold. PBDE's also are showing up in wildlife worldwide, settling in oceans and lakes just as PCB's and DDT did. Even polar bears near the North Pole and sperm whales feeding in deep ocean waters are contaminated with them. Some environmental scientists say the discovery of PBDE's near the North Pole proves their global spread, and that this should be an impetus for U.S. regulators to take precautionary measures as soon as possible.
